A twilight wander through the Zilker Park Rock Garden to identify local flora and discuss Central Texas foraging possibilities. It’s mid-May in Austin, so we will catch the tail end of the afternoon heat while looking for wild pecans, agarita, or simply appreciating the succulents tucked into the limestone. We aren't here to fill buckets, but rather to practice our ID skills and talk shop with other plant-curious locals who know their way around a field guide. As is typical for these meetups, we are aiming for a 6:30 PM start, but if the group is slightly delayed by the inevitable Zilker parking search, we will adjust accordingly.
Event plan
- 6:30 PMConvergence & Plant TalkMeet at the garden entrance. We will start with brief introductions and a casual check-in on what everyone is currently trying to identify in their own neighborhoods.
- 6:50 PMThe Identification LoopA slow-paced walk through the tiered garden beds to spot edible or medicinal natives. This is strictly for observation and identification practice rather than harvesting.
- 7:30 PMKnowledge SwapGathering at the stone benches to share favorite local trails, recommended field guides, and recent foraging successes or failures.
- 8:00 PMDusk DepartureFinal plant IDs as the light fades, followed by a casual dispersion back to the parking lot or nearby Barton Springs.
